Welcome

Welcome to Thames Valley Images

The Thames Valley is a region of South East England, centred on the River Thames west of London. Its boundaries vary with context. The area is a major economic hub and is sometimes referred to as England’s Silicon Valley, due to the concentration of high-technology companies. As well as software and IT businesses based around Reading and towards the east, the western area around Oxford has a concentration of medical and life-science companies. Space research and other high-frontier organisations can be found at Harwell Campus and Culham in Oxfordshire. In contrast, agricultural activity is a feature of South Oxfordshire and North Wiltshire.

As a tourist destination, the Thames Valley is regarded to be the area close to the River Thames, running from its source in Gloucestershire towards West London. There are a host of major heritage and tourist attractions throughout the region.

The Thames Valley is well-served by travel and transport infrastructure. The region is crossed west to east by the M4 motorway, while the M40 motorway skirts the north of the region, and the A34 trunk route runs north to south, to the west of the region. The Great Western Railway main line from London to Bristol runs through the centre of the region, with major stations at Slough, Reading, Didcot and Swindon. The Chiltern line runs north of Oxford towards London, while the Great Western Berks and Hants railway line runs from Reading to Newbury and onward towards the West of England. To the east of the region is located Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world.

The Thames Valley Images picture library is a major image resource which reflects the nature, extent and diversity of the region. Images are available as downloads including the following categories:

Agriculture, Civic and Commercial Buildings, Construction and Regeneration, Education and Science, Green Spaces, Heritage, Infrastructure, Landscapes, Residential and Housing, Rivers and Waterways, Sacred Places and Transport.

The library is a major collection of Thames Valley imagery and new pictures are being added regularly. There are also collections of images from beyond the Thames Valley region.
